Campaign Traits

At character creation each player chooses one trait to represent how that character has been covering tuition at Low Bridge University. By default, player characters each start with 150 gp in their bank accounts.

Alumni Bursary

The Low Bridge University Alumni Association raises money to help provide for the children of its members.

Prerequisite: a living parent who attended LBU (Please add this parent to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.); Benefit: Your bank account balance begins with an additional 50 gp. Dr Zemira knows your parent and they are in occasional communication.

Athletic Scholarship

Those sufficiently skilled to join one of LBU’s competitive teams receive financial assistance from the school.

Prerequisite: Physical ability scores totalling no less than 37; Benefit: You receive a masterwork cloak in the school’s colours with your name embroidered on it in Draconic. You gain a +2 trait bonus on the following checks and saves: Swim checks made to resist nonlethal damage from exhaustion; Constitution checks made to continue running; Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from a forced march; Constitution checks made to hold your breath; Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from starvation or thirst; Fortitude saves made to avoid nonlethal damage from hot or cold environments; and Fortitude saves made to resist damage from suffocation. You may begin play as a barbarian.

Bledlow (Campus Security)

Anyone competent in a fight can make money on the side working as a Bledlow.

Prerequisites: BAB +1; Benefit: You may take along one suit of masterwork light armour in the school colours (made of standard materials) as well as one masterwork simple bludgeoning weapon engraved with the school crest. You don’t suffer the usual penalty when dealing non-lethal damage with a bludgeoning weapon incapable of dealing slashing or piercing damage.

Church Patron

Someone in your home church thinks you’re darling, and is helping pay for your school.

Prerequisites: Charisma 13. Knowledge (religion) +4. You are a regular attendant of an organized religion on your homeworld.; Benefit: You own a silver holy symbol of your faith. You are required by your patron to behave as though you have an allegiance to at least two of your religion’s domains (regardless of whether you actually have such an allegiance). You must send a letter to your patron no less frequently than once a month. Your bank balance increases by 50 gp each Wealday. Crippling Student Loans

You’re paying for school by yourself, and you’re doing it by borrowing money.

Prerequisites: none; Benefit: Each Wealday the bank of Abadar will transfer 50 gold from your balance into the account of your creditor. You gain a +2 trait bonus to saving throws against poison and a +2 trait bonus to Survival.

Deceiving the Hive

Your hive back on Castrovel is still paying your tuition, and your situation has become complicated. They think that you’re an honours student, but you haven’t kept up your marks. As soon as you are within telepathic range of any member of your hive they will immediately learn the truth.

Prerequisites: member of the formian race; Benefit: You qualify to take the Redemption story feat. Until you either fulfil that feat or somehow become transformed into a formian myrmarch, any member of your hive who discovers the truth will attempt to kill you in order to purge weakness from the group.

Draconic Patron

One of Triaxus’s dragons has taken an interest in you.

Prerequisites: a relationship with a copper dragon (Please add this dragon to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.); Benefit: A copper dragon has selected you as his/her champion in the odd wagers their kind often make. You have a +1 trait bonus to Knowledge (arcana). Your starting bank balance has an additional 100 gp. You have agreed to allow your patron to scry on you at will, and to obey any sendings your patron sends you.

Evening Shifts at a Tavern

You go to school during the day and work in a tavern in the evenings.

Prerequisites: Charisma 13; Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus to Bluff and Craft (brewer). You only require seven hours sleep to be rested, instead of eight. (This includes regaining spells.)

Fine Arts Scholarship

As a Fine Arts student, you’re aware that you’re being trained for a great job, not a high-paying one.

Prerequisites: +6 in one Perform skill; Benefit: Your bank account balance begins 20% less than that of other students. You may take along one musical instrument or artisan’s tools belonging to the school and worth up to 100 gp. You own a masterwork artisan’s outfit or entertainer’s outfit, as appropriate for presenting your performance, as well as one standard artisan’s outfit or entertainer’s outfit in school colours.

Gaming the System

You carefully research the precise requirements to receive a given bursary, do whatever it takes to meet those requirements, and by the time anyone figures out that you’re not precisely the target recipient you’re already working on a new scholarship.

Prerequisites: Int 15; Benefit: Choose two skills from Bluff, Diplomacy, and Sense Motive. You receive a +1 trait bonus to those skills.

Honours Student

Your grades are excellent, and academia has rewarded you accordingly. Your bursaries are paying for your expenses, but you always need to keep working. Your thesis will be due soon.

Prerequisites: +8 in at least three Knowledge skills; Benefit: When you spend a hero point to increase the result of a Knowledge check you double its bonus to the result. Your maximum number of hero points increases by 1. You gain a +1 trait bonus to all Knowledge skills. You may be required to complete extra assignments for other classes during this directed study.

Lab Assistant

Clever hands are always needed at a university, and many professors budget accordingly.

Prerequisites: +5 in one Craft skill; Benefit: You may take along one lab or toolkit belonging to the school and worth up to 100 gp. If you are trained in a Craft skill appropriate to a broken item, you can repair that item for half the raw material cost and only a -1 penalty on your Craft skill check for using improvised tools. Alternately, you may spend 1 hour to scrounge materials to eliminate the raw material cost entirely.

Mature Student

You spent time working, and now you’re going to get your education without going into debt.

Prerequisites: Three hit dice; Benefit: Your bank account balance begins 50% greater than that of other students. You may be middle aged. You may take an additional level of expert. You gain Skill Focus as a bonus feat for the profession skill of your choice, which is always a class skill for you. Please add one person to the wiki with whom you have had an extended relationship (business, family, romantic, etc) or indicate that the GM should do so.

Military Training

Your homeworld needs soldiers, and anyone with a university degree is automatically made an officer. This is the life for you!

Prerequisites: BAB +1; Benefit: You are an officer cadet on your homeworld. You have one suit of light or medium masterwork armour with your military’s insignia on it, and you are responsible for maintaining it in good order. You have one service uniform and one dress uniform. You have a +1 weapon belonging to the military, marked appropriately. As an immediate action you may name a teamwork feat and act as though you possessed that feat for the purposes of allowing your allies to use it until the beginning of your next turn. You have a supervisor in the military who expects written reports by the first of every month. (Please add this individual to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.) At the end of the current semester you are ordered to return to your homeworld for four months of military training.

Mysterious Benefactor

What’s the worst that could happen?

Prerequisites: You were contacted anonymously while still on your homeworld and you agreed to an unspecified future service in exchange for having your tuition covered. This agreement was notarized and witnessed by someone who appeared to be a member of your own race but whom you never saw other than on this one occasion.; Benefit: Your bank account balance begins at 5 000 gp.

Reckless Gambler

You trusted your livelihood to the fates, and helped them along when you could.

Prerequisites: +4 in Profession (gambler); Benefit: You gain a +2 trait bonus to Appraise. Once per session you may wager a hero point. Flip a coin and call it while it’s in the air. If you’re correct, you keep your wager and gain another hero point. If you’re wrong you lose your wager.

Ties to Organized Crime

You know some people on your homeworld, and you sometimes do work for them. They are very generous in their rewards for your loyalty, doing such things as paying for your tuition and having a small lead-lined pouch surgically implanted into your abdomen.

Prerequisites: you may not have an allegiance to law; Benefit: You have a secret compartment in your abdomen that you can access by prying open a slit that looks like a healed scar. It can expand to about the size of your fist. It might not be empty at the time of character creation, depending on your situation. Roll a d20 any time you receive a critical hit, and on a natural 1 you have lead poisoning. Accessing the compartment takes 3 full rounds, and cannot be done in Medium or Heavy armour. At the end of the current semester you are expected back on your homeworld in order to do a small job for the organization.

Transfer Student

You spent time at a cheap school, working a night job and saving your money. Now you have advanced credits and some money to get you through at least one more year of school.

Prerequisites: Three hit dice; Benefit: You have one additional class skill of your choice. You begin play with a number of ranks in that skill equal to your hit dice; these are in addition to your normal starting skill ranks. Your have two additional clothing outfits in the colours of your old school. Expert is an additional favoured class for you. One of your old professors is a friend of Dr Zemira. Please add the professor to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.

Trust Fund

Predators on your homeworld killed your family. You live, and you inherited what was left. It has gotten you this far, but it has nearly run out.

Prerequisites: Your entire immediate family is dead. (Please either add them to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.) Benefit: Your bank account balance begins at 100 gp. You gain a +5 trait bonus on rolls to confirm critical hits against the greatest threat found on your home planet and other targets of the appropriate creature Type/Subtype (as per favoured enemy).
